“Travelling is the healthiest addiction, don’t you think? And with country borders slowly opening up to South Africans again, that getaway you have been dreaming of is almost within reach. But before we jet-set, let’s talk about our skin when travelling.
The Changing Air
The skin breaks out when it lacks moisture. Whether it may be the dry air in the plane or that the air at your final destination is dry, it is going to affect your skin. Always check the weather of the place you are travelling to and adjust your skincare accordingly. If it is cold, the air will be dry, and your skin will dry out quickly. If it is a warm place, it will be humid, and your skin will release sebum and be prone to comedones (clogged pores).
Unnecessary Changes In Your Skin Care Products
You have checked into your room, and just when you plan to have a relaxing bath or shower, you see these small skincare products provided by the hotel. While it is hard to resist the temptation, you need to remember that these products don’t address specific skin problems or are not designed to suit your skin type. Using them will only lead to breakouts and other skin issues.
A Change In Your Schedule
When you are travelling, your sleep cycle becomes erratic. Hence, you might not be able to follow the usual skincare routine that you do when at home. So the good news is, there are fixes for all these travel skincare woes. You don’t need to invest in new skincare products while traveling. All you need to do is tweak your routine and take along only the “must-have” products.
Here is how you can do that.
- Carry Towelettes
If you don’t want to carry a cleanser or use the cleanser provided by the hotel, pre-moisten some facial wipes saturated with your usual cleanser. Carry them in a ziplock bag. You can use them anywhere – in the airplane while traveling in a bus or car while sitting at the beach, or in your hotel room. iS CLINICAL CREAM CLEANSER was designed as a waterless cleanser and is ideal for travelling.
- Carry A Facial Mist Spray
This is a must-have for everyone! Whether you are on a weekend trip or a long “vacay”, never forget to carry a facial mist. It is hydrating and will keep your skin refreshed throughout your trip. When you spritz it on your face, you add moisture to your skin. This is especially helpful if you have dry and combination skin or if you are traveling to a colder climate. COPPER FIRMING MIST is the ideal travelling mist that comfortably fits into any handbag or travelling bag.
- Don’t Forget Moisturiser
A good moisturiser is essential. It keeps your skin hydrated, which prevents breakouts and skin issues caused by excessive dryness. Remember to moisturise your skin before you board your flight. The air inside planes is drying and can damage your skin. A great travel moisturiser is REPARATIVE MOISTURE EMULSION. It contains our scientifically formulated Extremozyme Technology, which I call the “ bubble wrap for your skin and cells”. It provides protection and sufficient moisture from harm to the skin during travelling and is suitable for all skin types and conditions.
- Don’t Ditch SPF
The one product I cannot go without is sunscreen. Sunscreen goes a long way in taking care of your skin. It doesn’t just protect us from your everyday sun, but against all UVA/B and C as well as the now common blue light found on all our devices. iS CLINICAL wide variety of SPF’s available. Speak to your iS CLINICAL Skincare Professional to advise on the best options for your skin.
- Avoid Touching Your Face Often
Keeping your hands off your face helps minimise breakouts. Strictly abide by this rule when travelling. This is because you might pick up unknown bacteria that can cause multiple skin issues. Wash your hands with an antibacterial hand wash or sanitizer as much as possible.
- Skip Makeup
Whether you are about to board your flight or check out some tourist spots, makeup is a strict no-no. Many prefer using a tinted moisturizer while traveling, but it is better to stick to your normal moisturiser and SPF to let your skin breathe. If you are stuck on makeup, PerfecTint Powder SPF 40 comes in 5 tints to suit any complexion.
- Don’t Compromise On Your Beauty Sleep
Not getting enough sleep can make your skin more prone to issues. So, try to get a good night’s sleep even when you are traveling. We all want to look good in our vacation pictures. If you take good care of your skin while traveling, you don’t need to rely on foundation to make your skin look and feel good.
Be prepared when packing your products
Get a plastic-lined toiletry bag that has a lot of zipper compartments and dividers (at least three), which will come in handy if anything does break or leak (which we would obviously like to avoid).
If you are a frequent traveller, I suggest keeping the black lids you initially receive with your serum and exchanging that with your dropper when travelling to avoid any leakage.
Plastic containers are ideal to travel with, but glass is used for many skincare products due to the reaction plastic and active ingredients may cause. Wrap your glass containers in a facecloth to avoid breakage as far as possible.
I recommend iS CLINICAL’s Experience Essential Kit when going on holiday or travelling. It comes with all of your necessary serums (5ml containers might I add), a 60ml CLEANSING COMPLEX, a sample size REPARATIVE MOISTURE EMULSION and YOUTH EYE COMPLEX. It even comes with a little travel bag. So cute.
Safe travels and enjoy your well-deserved break-away.”
